ACT On It: Mindfulness For Teens is a non-profit organisation that aims to help young people improve their mental health.

It is founded by Reuben Lowe, who is a mental health therapist and mindfulness teacher at the Melbourne Clinic. The organisation is a registered charity with ACNC and run by volunteers.

ACT On It’s activities are based around Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT), which is an evidence-based therapy derived from contextual psychology.

Acceptance & Commitment Therapy incorporates mindfulness practices, builds emotional resilience, and teaches people to manage their negative thoughts and emotions, especially in times of fear and distress.

ACT On It aims to use technology to give teens access to simple and fun psycho-social interventions via digital means, to help them grow into strong and responsible adults.

The organisation aims to reach teenagers who might not easily access clinical care, with tools that can also be used by psychologists complementary to clinical care.

ACT On It: Mindfulness for Teens is creating and launching a free mobile phone app to help teenagers who are struggling with their mental health. The app is designed for children 11 years and older.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, nearly one in 6 teenagers in Australia had mental health problems including depression and anxiety.

COVID-19 is now having an even more drastic impact on young people’s mental health and disrupting their schooling, social relationships and employment prospects.

Through colourful videos, exercises and text, the ACT On It app will give young people tools to strengthen their emotional resilience and reduce harmful patterns of behaviour.

It will help teenagers learn how to manage negative thoughts and emotions and other essential psychological skills that they don’t learn in school.

The easy-to-use app is based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), which is a form of psychology and an evidence-based treatment for depression and chronic pain.

ACT also focuses on core values. For teenagers who feel lost in life, ACT can help them focus on what matters and move forward in a meaningful direction with purpose.

This will give them tools to move through these difficult times during the COVID-19 pandemic and to grow into strong and courageous members of their community.

This app will have a powerful impact on improving teenagers’ mental health because ACT is a complete psychotherapy, as opposed to mindfulness which is a therapeutic tool. ACT incorporates mindfulness practice, but also teaches people essential skills such as how to stay grounded in times of distress.

There are currently no other free apps for young people based on ACT.
